A short biography profile of Adilur Rahman Khan

Adilur Rahman Khan is a lawyer in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and a human rights activist. He was born on 2 July 1961 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He completed his Bachelor of Laws, LLB (Hons) and Master of Laws from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He also completed a Masters degree in International & Comparative Law (LLM) from Vrije Universitiet in Brussel, Belgium.

 

As a lawyer, he has taken up many human rights cases throughout his professional career. He assisted in various cases involving Constitutional and Human Rights issues in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, including criminal revision matters and challenging illegal detentions. As a lawyer he also succeeded in obtaining the release of 300 detainees belonging to the ethnic minority community of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. He was Deputy Attorney General for Bangladesh from October 2001 till he resigned in May 2007 at the time of a military-backed caretaker government. As DAG he was the focal person in respect of matters regarding trafficking in persons.

 

Adilur Rahman Khan has been actively engaged in defending the human rights of the Bangladeshi people and was involved in campaigns and activities for the promotion of a democratic culture in the Asian region. His unwavering dedication to the cause of human rights in Bangladesh has been acknowledged by several leading human rights institutions. In 2014, he was awarded the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights, the 31st Annual Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award and the International Bar Association (IBA) Human Rights Award in recognition for defending human rights in Bangladesh. He was also a runner up awardee for the 2014 Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights. In 2017 he was a recipient of the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law.
